Blimey, I wrote this article a year ago! I can kind of see your point with regard to The Chauffeur, but my thought was – if you’re going to pick one Duran Duran song that really defined them, and a musical era, surely it’d be Rio?

Couldn’t disagree more about The Chauffeur. The Cure while already this moody wouldn’t become this polished until 3 years later with The head on the door album.
This song was a big departure from the others. I would throw this song closer to Davids Bowie and Sylvian. For almost 30 years this is the song I revisit more than any other by Duran Duran.

Yep, got the vinyl box set somewhere! Some great stuff on there, like Cath Carroll’s “Moves Like You”, but some duffers too. Sadly Factory’s quality control was rather lax. Great shout though.

If you like New Order & the Durutti Column (which I think you do), you should probably also check out “Palatine: The Factory Story 1979-1990″. It’s a 4 CD boxed set, full of JoyDiv, New Order, A Certain Ratio etc. There’s a bit too much Happy Mondays included for my liking, but there are three Durutti Column songs to make up for it.

Speaking of Bruce Springsteen (who, although taking your point about the boom in guitar driven rock in the mid eighties, I feel compelled to point out released Born To Run, his third album, in 1975, which went to number 3 in the US and went 6 x platinum), you have to talk about Atlantic City soon! Have to admit it’s a strange choice, followed later by I’m On Fire…hmm…
